In Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday, a four-storey building collapsed in the commercial city.
The building, which is yet to be completed, and located at 22, Nnewi
Street, in Odoakpu community, consists of 14 flats and three shops.
But providence played a positive part, as people who normally work on
the building site, had all closed for the day and gone home.
Sunday Sun learnt that no casualty was recorded in the incident, which happened at the wee hours of Saturday.
Mr Cletus Ezendo, an eyewitness and resident of Nnewi Street, said
people in the neigbourhood were frightened when the building fell with a
great noise and smoke oozing out from the rubble.
Ezendo said: “We rushed out only to discover that it was the
uncompleted building, a pole from my resident, that fell flat. We thank
God that nobody was living in the building yet and it happened when the
workers constructing the fourth floor had completed their work and gone
home.
“This morning, we learnt the collapsed building had affected a
residential five-storey building close to it and had made cracks in that
building.’
As at press time, some prospective tenants, who had already paid rent
for the building, were seen worried over the recovery of their money.
Sunday Sun could not get the owner of the building or his contractor
to ascertain exactly what led to the collapse of the building.
