Difficulty: Moderate
TIPS:
1. Determine your style. If you are a more laid-back type of person, make the words you speak match your personality. One of the ways to do this relates to the words you choose to put emphasis on when rapping.
2. Practice to build confidence and ensure your words and thoughts become more fluid. Stand in front of the mirror while listening to your favorite rapper’s song, and freestyle over that beat to practice on your own. When you get stuck, rap along with whatever he’s saying so you start to learn not to come to a dead stop in live situations.
3. Memorize lines and tactics; this is not cheating but an intelligent way to link together thoughts and phrases when in a live situation. Come up with original signature phrases to allow you time in a real freestyle event to think of something else. Be sure that when you are saying these lines you are thinking of something else to freestyle that is not memorized. Learn how to multitask, to speak and think about the next line and how you are going to convey it.
4. Tailor your freestyle to your opponent, assuming you are freestyle battle rapping and not just freestyle rapping. Pick out relevant things to talk about that relate to your opponent. Throw your best lyrical punches without regard to their feelings. Study your opponent before he opens his mouth, and if he freestyles first, use his own words against him if possible.
5. Test your skills in a live exhibition. Know the rules before you step up to the microphone. If you don’t have organized exhibitions, seek out someone who’s interested in freestyle battle rapping with you.
BONUS (ChopKnuckle). Don’t give up. If you lose, have the perseverance to get back up and do it again. This mind-set will build your confidence and give you more swagger when rapping. THUMBSUP. Find instrumentals online to practice with to give you a beat without an artist speaking over it. Freestyle battle rap is a lyrical art form and should in no way induce or lead to physical violence.
