For the past one year, the public has only seen as much of Jesse Jagz as he’s allowed them to see. He’s made the headlines 3 times in the past one year. First for leaving Chocolate City, then each time a single from his album drops (Murder Dem, Redemption).
The singles sounded nothing like the Jesse Jagz we used to know. The album, he promises, will be more of the same: different, painstakingly crafted good music he’s spent the last 14 months brooding over.
MIabaga.com recently had an interview with Jesse Jagz and here’s what he had to say
Your album is one of the most anticipated, by fans, the industry even random passers by. You’ve been on the quiet side apart from a few appearances. What’s the deal? What have you been up to?
Well I’ve been working. And I think me not being out there has been from beginning of 2012…into this year. I’ve spent the time sitting at home, you know, working on my music. Working on the album, working on music…you know, that’s my job. And I’ve been working
All that time to focus on music?
Yeah on my own music…my own work. Working on it for about a year and two months.
What can we expect from the album?
It’s just going to be music. With the album I just tried to push the boundary. You know what I mean? Writing, production, arrangement, engineering…I set out to just make good music. Forget about being Nigerian, forget about being in Lagos and just make some good music. I guess that’s just all. The hype and build up and everything else is just as a result of the music.
What due you expect the reaction to be?
Well it’s human beings listening, so it’s definitely going to be mixed. Mehn even if I released the best album in the world, I’d still have to deal with people who didn’t like it. It’s music. I guess for the people who are going to like it, they’re going to love it. For the people who it’s meant for, they’re going to love it. But it’s not meant for everybody.
It’s going to be available on iTunes, and there’ll be Alaba album version…and an international version that’ll have a documentary and pictures. Videos will be out with the album
Do you think the album projects you more as a rapper or producer?
I think it brings me out as a musician. It’s not about the production, it’s not about the lyricism, it’s about all those things coming together, finally. The artiste the producer, the composer…for me, it’s me taking my craft higher all round. For me, it a statement of who I am as a person
Who’s the new Jagz we’re hearing in the music?
The new Jagz is..*laughs*…new Jagz is…He’s just more thoughtful… more manly about everything. More mature. And I’m not saying there’r no…you know how Nigerians are like: “Oh that means there are no party songs?” No, there are party songs, but they are songs, I deem to be party songs for my age and my maturity. It’s not your everyday album.
Aight, so help us out here, If we were going to title this as sensationally as possible. You know how Sun newspaper does it: SHOCKING!!..
Jesse Jagz has been working on his album for a year!
That’s a lot of time.
Yeah, there are 16 songs on the album. I cut it down to 16. I recorded maybe like 200 songs…just kept recording. It’s music so you can tell when…I just had to follow my heart…feel the music at a certain level. There’s still another project that may come out before the end of the year. Because there’s so much material I have.
I have Wizkid, 9ice, Lindsey, James Maverik, featured on it. There’s no other rapper on the album . Just me, and these guys. The song with Femi Kuti will be added to the deluxe edition on itunes. Producers I worked with are Konnect, Shady bizniz, Samklef and Guilty Beats… He’s a Ghanaian producer. But still, I ended up producing on every song. Over what they had done. But I’d say I produced 11 songs myself.
Which song is your favorite?
Honestly I think it’s all the songs. I listened to it 3 times yesterday and every song is different, and occupies a different space in my mindspace. I love them unequally, but equally. Like children.
So True fans of JagzNation, keep watching, the album drops. Been working on it for a while. And I think…I think it’s going to be tough for any other artiste to put out an album. After this. It’s going to take a while.
I think that’s my headline there.
Thy Kingdom Come Jagznation Vol 1 drops second week of July.
“It’s Going to Be Tough For Any Artiste To Put Out An Album, After Mine Drops” - Jesse Jagz
