Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was interviewed byMohammed Adow of Al Jazeera. The interview which was broadcast on the 13th of April 2013 is causing feverish levels of debate online.
The overall focus of the report was the rise of new generation churches in Nigeria. The synopsis states “In Nigeria, faith-healing Pentecostal Churches promising instant miracles are drawing in more worshippers than more traditional institutions. The Redeemed Christian Church of God prides itself on holding what it calls the largest gathering of Christians in the world. And its pastor, Enoch Adeboye, has become one of the richest people in Nigeria.“
From the tone of the report, it was clear that the interviewer’s perspective was that it was absurd for Nigerian pastors to live in “Palatial Mansions” and own “Private Jets”.
Pastor Adeboye responded by stating that “there are things you need…when you have to oversee churches in 160 nations, you can’t do that on a bicycle“.
The reporter Mohammed ends the report by saying “More and more Nigerians have convinced themselves that their government has gone to sleep so to their pastors they run for help”
