Modeling in Nigeria is not very rewarding because of these setbacks:

1. The personality: Are you able to withstand challenges against all odds? Most people want modeling as a part-time job while it’s supposed to be the other way round. Modelling is supposed to be a full time job. Do you take care of your outer appearance and inner peace? Do you focus on keeping your skin clear and maintaining your body fitness? But I’m not here to tell you how to become a model.

2. Most of the people that are aspiring to be a model don’t know the kind of model they want to be; if they want to be a plus-size model, runway model, print model, an underwear model or any type of model. This decision will enhance the type of agency you want to register with.

3.Modeling agencies are where the bigger problem lies.  Almost every major city in Nigeria has multiple modeling agencies. Some are there to recruit models while some are there to con people. So many people don’t know about the business and end up getting conned. No agency should be asking you for more than twenty thousand naira (#20,000) when meeting you. Now this is where you should be smart. Ask them about how many super models they’ve worked with. Some maybe real but have not worked with any super model. Then you ask them about their plans for the company, if their plans are not in line with yours then walk away before you waste your time.

4. Fashion agencies: Most times fashion agencies don’t want professional models if they aren’t celebrities. Big Fashion agencies and other industries go for celebrities to model for them, and small companies download their pictures from the internet which is even more pathetic.

Statistics have shown that in more than hundred companies, 95 percent use celebrities. Now it’s time for Nigerians to stop making the rich richer and the poor poorer. The change should start from you.
